There are few things in the life that I would recommend to everyone with a pulse. As humans we differ in such infinitely fascinating ways that it can be difficult to find common ground, especially in this increasingly divisive age of social media and political polarization. However, there is one common thread that we all share as passengers on this tumultuous planet that is worthy of deep consideration and acceptance--death. The Day of the Dead tour with Echeri was a perfect opportunity for me to unplug and remember what it means to be a human. Fueled by centuries of tradition and cultural vibrancy, the day of the dead ceremonies held throughout Michoacan were medicinal for me in many ways--especially as an American deprived of a community intentionally congregating to reflect on what it means to be mortal. While the tour was deeply spiritual, it was also tempered by the levity of a mezcal factory tour, visits to archeological sites, and evening fires beside friends at our beautiful residence in the countryside. The tour guides were all bilingual and very accomodative throughout our stay, providing answers to all of our burning questions.Every local person I met was genuinely kind and grateful to share his or her culture with an outsider. The plazas were particularly beautiful and adorned vibrantly with flowers and decorations commemorating the event. Dancers, parades and music filled the streets as we walked throughout historic communities taking in the sites. I would whole-heartedly recommend this experience to any person seeking something real in this increasingly consumer driven, technologically dominated world that too often dehumanizes our experience in pursuit of capital. My time in Michoacan was well spent and I have zero apprehensions in recommending it to any adventurous person with a pulse.
